Panama City is one of the easiest bases in the Americas for day trips: in a few hours you can be on a Pacific island, in the rainforest next to the Panama Canal, inside a volcanic crater or exploring Spanish forts on the Caribbean. Here are seven day trips we recommend, with how to get there and tips to plan each one.
1. Miraflores Locks and the Panama Canal
The closest and most iconic trip. The Miraflores Locks visitor center, on the edge of the city, has viewing terraces where you can watch ships being raised and lowered between the Pacific and the canal, plus an exhibition about the canal’s history and how it works.
2. Panamá Viejo
The ruins of the first Spanish city on the Pacific coast of the Americas, founded in 1519 and destroyed in 1671. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (together with Casco Viejo). Climb the restored cathedral tower for views of the modern skyline across the bay — a striking contrast in one photo. Pair it with an afternoon in Casco Viejo, the city that replaced it.
3. Isla Taboga
Known as the “Island of Flowers”, Taboga is a small, quiet island with a colonial village, a beach facing the city skyline and hiking trails to viewpoints. Ferries leave from the Amador Causeway and the crossing takes about an hour, which makes it the easiest beach escape from the city.
4. Gamboa and Soberanía National Park
Less than an hour from downtown, the rainforest town of Gamboa sits where the Chagres River meets the canal. Soberanía National Park is famous among birdwatchers for Pipeline Road (Camino del Oleoducto), and boat trips on Gatún Lake let you see monkeys, sloths and the huge ships crossing the canal up close.
5. Portobelo and the Caribbean coast
About two hours from the city, Portobelo was one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire. Its forts are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Fortifications on the Caribbean Side of Panama: Portobelo–San Lorenzo”. Visit the Church of San Felipe, home of the Black Christ, then continue to the beaches and coral reefs around Isla Grande or take a boat to small coves nearby.
6. El Valle de Antón
A green mountain town built inside the crater of an extinct volcano, roughly two to two and a half hours west of the city. Cooler air, waterfalls such as El Chorro Macho, hikes to the hill of La India Dormida, a hanging-bridge canopy walk and a craft market make it a favorite weekend escape for Panamanians.
7. Guna Yala (San Blas Islands)
Hundreds of small Caribbean islands with white sand and turquoise water, governed by the indigenous Guna people as an autonomous territory. It is reached by 4×4 road to the port of Cartí and then by boat. A day trip is possible, but it means a very early start and a long day; most visitors enjoy it more with at least one night on an island.
How to plan your day trips from Panama City
- Combine nearby stops: Miraflores + Panamá Viejo + Casco Viejo fit in one day; Gamboa can be paired with the Miraflores Locks.
- Dry or green season: the dry season (roughly mid-December to April) is best for beaches and islands; the green season brings afternoon showers but lush landscapes and fewer visitors.
- Getting around: taxis and ride-hailing apps work well inside the city; for Portobelo, El Valle and Guna Yala a guided tour or a rental car is the most practical option.
- Bring: sunscreen, insect repellent, water, a light rain jacket and cash for small purchases.
