Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is an easy day trip from Dubai — and a very different experience: calmer streets, grand cultural landmarks and long stretches of waterfront. Here is how to get there, what to see and a simple one-day plan.
Getting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi
The two cities are about 140 km apart, roughly a 1.5-hour drive along the main coastal highway, depending on traffic and where you start in Dubai.
- Guided tour: the easiest option — transport, timing and entry arrangements are handled for you.
- Private car or taxi: flexible, and practical for families or small groups.
- Intercity bus: public buses connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi; check the current routes and schedules before you go.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The highlight of most visits: an immense white-marble mosque with dozens of domes, reflecting pools, intricate floral inlays and one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets. It welcomes visitors of all faiths outside prayer times.
Louvre Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat Island
On Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is famous for its huge latticed dome that creates a “rain of light” over the galleries. Its collection tells the story of human creativity across civilizations, and the building sits right on the water. Saadiyat Island also has calm public beaches and is home to other major cultural projects.
Qasr Al Watan and Qasr Al Hosn
Qasr Al Watan is a working presidential palace that opens its grand halls and library to visitors, with remarkable domes and craftsmanship. In the city center, Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi — a fort that tells the story of the city before oil.
The Corniche and Heritage Village
The Corniche is a long seafront promenade with beaches, gardens and cycling paths — ideal for a late-afternoon walk. Nearby, the Heritage Village recreates traditional Emirati life with crafts, a small museum and views back to the city skyline.
Yas Island
If you are traveling with children or love thrill rides, Yas Island is Abu Dhabi’s entertainment hub: theme parks such as Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World, a large water park and the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It deserves a full day on its own.
